Place Holder Trails & Rails Program

The Trails & Rails Program is an educational partnership between Amtrak and the National Park Service to offer a unique and interactive travel experience on trains throughout the country.

Interpretation on Amtrak’s Maple Leaf train heading west out of the Albany-Rensselaer train station covers the rich history of the Mohawk Valley, including the story of the Erie Canal.  Programming on the Adirondack train heading north out of the Albany-Rensselaer train station includes local Revolutionary War history and stories of the Hudson River.

The Trails & Rails Program gives Amtrak passengers a unique window on the region.  The guides are instrumental in telling the great stories of events and people that shaped the nation’s history and pointing out unique sights that might otherwise be missed.

Volunteer Guides
Historians and local community enthusiasts are invited to become volunteer interpretive guides.  Volunteers receive both orientation and ongoing training to keep the program fresh, as well as meet the high standards set by the National Park Service.

The Trails & Rails Program is affiliated locally with the Saratoga National Historical Park and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.  The orientation program is also made possible with guidance from the Mohawk Valley Heritage Corridor, the New York State Canal Corporation, and the New York State Department of Transportation.
