Mohawk Towpath Byway, Waterford and Cohoes to Schenectady

 

Successful collaboration among eight municipalities is helping to preserve and showcase significant scenic, recreational, and historic resources along the Mohawk Towpath Byway. The Byway is a network of local, county, state, and federal highways that follow the historic route of the Erie Canal from Waterford and Cohoes to Schenectady.

Visitors to the Erie Canal are introduced to numerous canal historic sites and attractions within the Byway.
  Regional Collaboration
The Byway Coalition has leveraged thousands of dollars in funding to assist municipalities with improving visitor services.

Links significant canal sites
Interpretive signs, expanded bicycling and hiking trails, and a visitor guide tie together multiple attractions.
  A road with stories to tell
The Byway shares noteworthy stories of invention, innovation, and expansion that have shaped the region for hundreds of years.
 
The jury commended the project for:

 
  • Collaborating with multiple municipalities and stakeholders to preserve and promote the scenic, recreational, and historic assets of the Mohawk Towpath Byway;
     

  • Developing a pragmatic, regional approach to leveraging resources;
     

  • Offering year-round attractions with multiple avenues for experiencing the Byway;
     

  • Developing a comprehensive Discovery Guide that details what to do and see in the Byway. The guide also shares stories of the Erie Canal and of the role that communities played in the westward expansion and industrialization of the nation.

By car:

The Mohawk Towpath Byway offers a driving route with easy- to-follow signs along the Mohawk River and Erie Canal between Waterford and Cohoes and Schenectady.
 
By boat:
Boaters can access sites along the Byway from Lock 2 in Waterford through Lock 8 in Scotia. There are also a number of canoe and kayak access points.
 
By bike:
Tour all or part of the Byway by bicycle. Tour loops of varying lengths are available.
