Things to do: Fishing
The 524-mile Erie Canalway welcomes anglers all along its shores.* As a gateway to New York’s waters, the canal offers access to a wide range of fishing opportunities—from small streams to the Great Lakes.
Many fishermen seek out areas near the canal system’s locks, where fish often congregate. Common catches include: walleye, northern pike, small and large mouth bass, panfish, and blueback herring.
New York State requires everyone above the age of 16 to have a license to fish in New York’s freshwaters. For more detailed fishing regulations and information on fishing in New York, visit the Department of Environmental Conservation.
