Things to do: Fishing
The 524-mile Erie Canalway welcomes anglers all along its shores.* As a gateway to New York’s waters, the canal offers access to a wide range of fishing opportunities—from small streams to the Great Lakes.

Many fishermen seek out areas near the canal system’s locks, where fish often congregate. Common catches include: walleye, northern pike, small and large mouth bass, panfish, and blueback herring.

New York State requires everyone above the age of 16 to have a license to fish in New York’s freshwaters.  For more detailed fishing regulations and information on fishing in New York, visit the
Department of Environmental Conservation.

*Catch and release fishing regulations are in effect on the Champlain Canal from Bakers Falls in Hudson Falls to the Troy dam due to PCB contamination. See the Department of Environmental Conservation fishing regulations and the New York State Department of Health fish advisory above for details
